Course Description

This course provides an interdisciplinary exploration of mental health and well-being, emphasizing a holistic understanding of individual, community, and structural factors that shape mental health outcomes. The course integrates theoretical and practical knowledge to examine the interconnected dimensions of mental, physical, and social well-being across the lifespan. Students will develop applied skills to assess mental health, navigate resources, and foster resilience in diverse contexts.

 

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Define mental health and well-being using a holistic, interdisciplinary framework.

  2. Explain the influence of individual, social, and structural factors on mental health outcomes.

  3. Identify and assess mental health challenges across the lifespan using evidence-based approaches.

  4. Analyze the impact of stigma, inequity, and discrimination on mental health and well-being.

  5. Apply principles of effective communication, empathy, and active listening in mental health contexts.

  6. Develop strategies to foster resilience and coping mechanisms for self and others from diverse communities.

  7. Explore community and policy-level interventions for improving mental health and well-being.

  8. Evaluate mental health resources and services available in Canadian and global contexts.

  9. Design personalized plans to improve mental health and well-being for themselves or others.
