Course Description

This course offers a theoretical foundation for university athletics alongside a philosophical examination of sports. Topics covered will include: What is sport? How does the concept of sport relate to those of games, or play? What is fairness in sport? What are the ethics of competition or aggression in sport? What are the ethics of performance-enhancing technology in sport? What are the ethics of risk in sport? Readings will be drawn from classic and contemporary discussions.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read, analyze, and critique sport philosophy articles
  • Develop philosophic writing skills and learn to make cohesive and persuasive philosophic arguments
  • Integrate ideas presented in class with personal notions of fair play and cheating
  • Describe and compare the defining elements of play, game play, and sport
  • Describe the fundamental components of the main ethical approaches to sport
  • Apply the ethical approaches of sport to contemporary issues, including the use of performance-enhancing technology and brain injuries in professional sports
  • Develop philosophical tools useful for the analysis of sport
