SOC*2760 - Homicide Locally and Globally
Course Description
Using a global lens to study homicide, this course will review legal definitions of homicide, critique data and methods used to study homicide, review theoretical explanations, examine trends and patterns in homicide locally and globally, and discuss homicide prevention efforts. Various types of homicide will be examined including corporate homicide, serial/mass homicide, familicide, femicide, and youth homicide.
What You'll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain homicide using a sociological criminological framework, including why it is important to study this phenomenon
- Describe the role the media plays in shaping our perceptions of homicide and who is involved, as well as the accuracy of these representations
- Identify and describe available data sources used to study homicide and analyze their strengths and limitations
- Identify, explain and assess major theories of homicide, and apply the theories to real-life scenarios
- Differentiate among the many types of homicide, including the common characteristics of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the killing
- Describe and assess the criminal justice and community responses to homicide and evaluate the effectiveness in deterring, controlling and preventing homicide
