Course Description

This course examines the social construction of sex and gender in Canadian and global contexts. Students will analyze how gender functions as a social structure shaping individual identities, interpersonal interactions, and societal institutions. Emphasis will be placed on contemporary research and case studies that explore the intersections of gender with other systems of inequality, including race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and ability.

What You'll Learn

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  • Critically engage with concepts of social identities.
  • Read and assess scholarly articles, in terms of their argument, assumptions, benefits, and limitations.
  • Produce academic writing that is critical, analytical, and reflective of your own interests.
  • Engage in (and enjoy!) critical thinking about the social world that you exist within and reflect on how the complexities of gender can be understood, questioned, embraced, resisted, and so on.
