Course Description

W.H. Auden wrote, “A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language.” But what exactly makes a poem a poem? In this course, you will explore this question through probing the various elements of this genre: rhythm, cadence, stanzaic structure, metre, image, and metaphoric language. You will read published work and attempt a variety of poetic forms, such as the sonnet, ghazal, and pantoum. Using instructor feedback and through workshopping with your fellow students, you will create and revise your own poems.

One person’s everyday words can be poetic to others. This course will help you understand your voice as much as the voices of others.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Examine and discuss creative writing elements used by published poets
  • Demonstrate a personal writing style with a sensitivity to the sounds, moods, and evocative effects of the language
  • Recognize and utilize poetic devices and elements of craft related to the readings and forms discussed in class
  • Engage in reflective writing related to your poetic practice
  • Offer insightful and constructive feedback on the creative work of your peers
  • Receive and integrate feedback into your own writing

  • There are no prerequisites for this course.
  • You may take this as an individual course or choose to complete the Creative Writing Certificate.

Section Notes

Registration closes on January 19, 2027 (if there is availability).

This course will be delivered remotely on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, beginning on January 13th, 2027 using CourseLink your course website, and live video conferencing. You will be required to participate in the live conferencing sessions each Wednesday evening.

*If one or more classes need to be rescheduled due to extenuating circumstances, the rescheduled class will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2027, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm (or portion thereof).

Further information will be provided after registration. It is the student's responsibility to be sure you have the technical requirements to participate in this course including having available:
