Course Description

W.H. Auden wrote, “A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language.” But what exactly makes a poem a poem? In this course, you will explore this question through probing the various elements of this genre: rhythm, cadence, stanzaic structure, metre, image, and metaphoric language. You will read published work and attempt a variety of poetic forms, such as the sonnet, ghazal, and pantoum. Using instructor feedback and through workshopping with your fellow students, you will create and revise your own poems.

One person’s everyday words can be poetic to others. This course will help you understand your voice as much as the voices of others.
