Course Description

In this introductory course, you will develop your ability to write creatively in a variety of forms. Concentrating on three genres (fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry), you will learn fundamental literary techniques and writing skills as well as how to give and receive feedback in writing workshops. You will be introduced to character development, plot, dialogue, voice, structure, narrative scene, and point of view. Techniques for getting started as a writer, finding a voice, and generating and revising material, as well as practical information about publishing and the writing life will be covered.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognize and understand fundamental creative writing elements used in prose fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry
  • Demonstrate the use of creative writing techniques in your writing
  • Develop your personal voice and style in your writing
  • Give and receive effective writing feedback through workshopping with fellow students
  • Understand the importance of using revisions to improve your writing
  • Develop a writing practice

Additional Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this course. You may take this as an individual course or choose to complete the Creative Writing Certificate. This is one of two required courses for the certificate.

Section Notes

This course will be delivered online synchronous on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm EST using CourseLink, your course website, and live video conferencing. You will be required to participate in the live conferencing sessions each Tuesday evening.

*If one or more classes need to be rescheduled due to extenuating circumstances, the rescheduled class will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2026, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm (or portion thereof).

It is the student's responsibility to be sure you have the technical requirements to participate in this course including having available:
