Course Description

Examine the processes, issues and techniques involved in developing and administering a compensation system. Explore the theoretical and applied aspects of the compensation function, the link between this function and the organizational management process, and the compensation system design necessary to attract, retain, and motivate the required workforce.

This course is well suited for those working towards a University of Guelph Diploma in Human Resources Management, Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation, PMCP, and people working in or who wish to work in human resources or payroll. This course is offered in the Summer Semester.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of the strategic framework of compensation
  2. Explore the behavioral framework for compensation
  3. Review the components of compensation including performance pay choices and how to formulate a reward and compensation strategy
  4. Review the job evaluation process
  5. Describe the Pay Equity Act and related processes, and develop a pay equity compliant compensation system
  6. Evaluate the labour market by analyzing data from compensation surveys and labour supply
  7. Review the performance management process and calculate performance pay
  8. Design and develop performance pay plans
  9. Design and develop indirect pay plans
  10. Implement and maintain an effective compensation system.

Registration closes on Wednesday, April 21st at 11:59 p.m.

This course will be delivered remotely on Wednesday evenings from April 15 - June 24, 2026. You will be required to participate via live video conferencing each Wednesday evening from 6:30pm - 9:30pm.

*If one or more classes need to be rescheduled due to extenuating circumstances, the rescheduled class will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm (or portion thereof).

This course uses live video conferencing, combined with the CourseLink Learning Management System. You are required to attend all scheduled online synchronous (live online) sessions.

Assignments may be due after the final live online class date. Details will be provided in the course outline.
