Course Description

This course focuses on the hands-on planning and implementation of urban agriculture projects. You will explore entrepreneurial strategies and the diverse motivations behind urban farming while critically examining the systems and structures that support it. Through a project-based approach, you will integrate your understanding of sustainability into planning for social, economic, and environmental well-being within complex urban food systems.

 

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Explain considerations for successful fruit and vegetable production in urban environments. 

  1. Evaluate marketing options for urban agriculture, including niche markets, value-added products, and specialty crops. 

  1. Summarize the suitability of various livestock for urban agriculture, along with their benefits and impacts. 

  1. Compare advantages and challenges of different urban farming methodologies. 

  1. Recall the planning steps for developing urban farm or food production/literacy projects. 

  1. Analyze agricultural practices such as permaculture and regenerative agriculture.  

  1. Assess various aspects of urban agriculture, including location, scale, actors, resource use, policies, and technical aspects, while applying equity, community, sustainability, and gender lenses.
