Course Description

This 5-day course will provide participants with comprehensive training into the components and methodologies used to conduct industry-recognized ecological land classification in Ontario. An in-person, field-based experience, the course includes an introduction to the classification system itself, methods for characterizing substrates, vegetation and ecosites, and opportunities to practice these skills in diverse landscapes. The course consists of 2 days of foundational learning at the Arboretum followed by 3 days of field application at nearby locations.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe what Ecological Land classification is and why it is needed.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of dominant substrate types and their characteristics using soil profiles.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of major vegetation types, the factors influencing them, and methods of characterizing and recording them.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of cosines and be able to circumscribe them using keys and aerial imagery.
  5. Apply methods of substrate and vegetation and ecosite analysis to identify and characterize habitat polygons on the landscape.

Additional Requirements

This course is ideal for the following: 

1) Undergraduate or graduate students nearing graduation or recently graduated but not employed in the area of ecological or environmental consulting and land use planning

2) Early career professionals in ecological or environmental consulting or land use planning.
