MATH*1060 - Foundations of Advanced Functions

Course Description

This course stresses fundamental principles of advanced functions and is designed for students without grade 12 or 4U Advanced Functions or equivalent, or who need to complete grade 12 or 4U Advanced Functions or equivalent academic upgrading. Topics include properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, combining functions, and rates of change.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Represent, simplify, and solve exponential and logarithmic expressions and equations, including applications to real-world contexts;
2. Describe and interpret key features of logarithmic functions through graphical, numerical, and algebraic representations;
3. Use radian measure and connect trigonometric ratios to their graphical and algebraic representations, including reciprocal relationships;
4. Solve trigonometric equations and verify identities using algebraic reasoning and established relationships;
5. Identify key features and represent polynomial and rational functions graphically, algebraically, and numerically;
6. Solve polynomial and simple rational equations and inequalities using appropriate algebraic and graphical methods;
7. Analyze functions created through operations and composition, and compare their properties to solve problems;
8.  Use functions to model real-world situations and solve problems, including those requiring non-standard or graphical approaches; and
9. Connect average and instantaneous rates of change using limits, and determine and apply derivatives of various functions to solve problems.
