Course Description

This course examines how governance systems and policy environments shape institutional accountability, legitimacy, and strategic capacity in higher education. Leaders will analyze how senates, boards, and labour frameworks interact in complex and sometimes contested contexts, and how commitments to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility (EDIA), reconciliation, and financial accountability are enacted through governance practice. Emphasis is placed on the leadership skills required to navigate tension, uphold integrity, and sustain trust in diverse governance structures. Through case discussions and applied reflection, participants will develop strategies for leading transparently, balancing competing mandates, and reinforcing institutional credibility in the face of change. 

 

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate governance frameworks and decision-making processes across institutional and jurisdictional contexts. 

  1. Interpret how labour, policy, and accountability systems influence institutional legitimacy. 

  1. Reconcile competing mandates such as academic freedom, fiscal constraints, and public mandates in governance contexts. 

  1. Design governance strategies that embed EDIA, reconciliation, and transparency. 

  1. Demonstrate leadership presence in sustaining legitimacy during governance conflict or reform.
