Course Description

This course focuses on the assessment of technology choices in food and agricultural businesses. It positions technology assessment in the broader context of policy making and technology management. It exposes students to examples of the benefits of technology assessment and the consequences of insufficient technology assessment. Students learn and apply specific analysis tools that guide technology choice and implementation.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able:

  • Describe the motivation and objectives of public technology assessment and discuss examples from food and agriculture for illustration
  • Describe the objectives and process of technology management of a firm and explain why technology assessment plays a critical role in that process
  • Describe the interdependency of technology, strategy, and organization of a firm and discuss examples from food and agriculture for illustration
  • Select adequate criteria for technology assessment depending on the level of maturity of the technology
  • Select and apply adequate methods and tools for specific aspects of technology assessment to support technology investment decisions
  • Identify relevant sources of risk and uncertainty associated with technology assessment and evaluate their impact on the outcome of technology assessment
  • Communicate objectives, process, requirements, methods, and outcomes of technology assessment in a professional and effective manner
  • Demonstrate capacity for professionalism and integrity in a teamwork environment, if applicable
