Course Description

An introductory course dealing with the basic concepts and methods of sociology applied to societies, groups and individuals. Students will gain an understanding of basic social processes such as socialization, social exchange, deviance and conformity, social change and basic social institutions such as the economy, the polity, the family, religion, education.

What You'll Learn

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  • Define and describe perspectives, theories, methods, and core concepts from a sociological perspective;
  • Apply key sociological theories to current news events and everyday life;
  • Explain the development of the discipline and its place in contemporary society;
  • Analyze personal perspectives of the social world according to one of the main sociological theorists;
  • Describe how perspectives around sexuality, social and gender stratification, education, race and ethnicity, economy and work are intertwined with current perspectives of everyday life; and
  • Identify and think critically about social issues.
