Course Description

This course aims to foster a deeper understanding of transferable knowledge and skills gained through employment, sports, student leadership, and volunteer experiences. This experiential learning course is designed to develop identifies critical professional skills that accomplished and capable students should have upon graduation: critical and creative thinking, literacy, global understanding, communication, and professional and ethical behaviour.

Students enhance their learning from their personally secured non-Co-op employment, leadership, or volunteer experience via structured reflection activities, including a final reflection report on work undertaken. Students will identify key learning moments, develop critical reflection skills, and connect their practical experiences to their competency development.

What You'll Learn:

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Interpret and apply the five competencies and corresponding traits identified by the University of Guelph to be highly desirable among employers
  • Create SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Targeted) and action plans for the selected 12-week experiential learning experience
  • Apply knowledge and skills gained through your academic program of study to your work, volunteer, student leadership, or athletic experience
  • Develop the following transferable skills and career competencies: critical and creative thinking, literacy, global understanding, communication, and professional and ethical behaviour
  • Evaluate and articulate fairly and objectively your performance in the role (and provide evidence supporting this self-assessment, including critical instance reflections); specifically, discuss strengths, weaknesses, and preferences for career development

Additional Requirements

Pre-requisite: 4.0 credits (replacing the 10.0 credits pre-req only for F24)

Restrictions: Students must have a qualifying experience in order to qualify for the course.

The qualifying experience must have the following characteristics:

  • Must be during the current term (i.e., previous experience does not qualify)
  • Minimum of 8 hours each week of the 12 weeks of the term
  • Not a Co-op Position
  • Paid (e.g. part-time job), unpaid (e.g., volunteer position), student leadership, high-performance sports (e.g., varsity athlete)
