Course Description
Global Perspectives in Equine Welfare explores welfare issues of domesticated and wild equids worldwide, considering social, legal and economic factors.
You will examine topics such as wild horse management, working horses in developing countries, welfare issues in donkeys and mules, racing and sport horse practices, slaughter legislation, unwanted horses, and equine rescue facilities. This course includes a comparison of global equine management practices, current advances in equid research, policy development and legislation.
By the end of this course, you will be able to discuss equine welfare and your role in sustainable development, contributing to positive welfare states globally.
What You'll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the drivers for research on equids and their role in achieving sustainable development globally
- Analyze the interconnection between equids’ welfare, environmental and human wellbeing, and identify welfare needs and risks associated with different activities worldwide
- Discuss the impact of equids on local economies and compare legal requirements for equid identification systems between countries
Additional Requirements
- This course is intended for adult learners, at least 18 years of age.
- You do not need access to a horse to complete this course and be successful.
- You can expect to spend 6 - 10 hours per week to complete the course material, discussions and assignments. Plan to be on the course website 3 - 5 times per week to keep up-to-date and on schedule with weekly readings, activities, and class discussion.
