Course Description

Explore the legislation and regulations that impact the functions of facility management and learn how these regulations interact in the design and operation of schools within the facilities management environment. Emphasis will be placed on emerging legislation and the implementation in the school environment.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and address risk management issues through proactive strategies
  • Implement the processes involved in the pre-qualification and selection of architects, consultants and contractors
  • Accurately interpret and utilize Canadian Construction Documents Committee (CCDC) information with contracts and tendering
  • Apply the process of managing large and small contracts, including the purpose of holdbacks, substantial completion, and liens
  • Demonstrate how legislative regulations (e.g., Ontario Building Code, Fire Code and Electrical Safety Code) impact the design and operation of schools within the facilities management environment
  • Understand the implications of the Planning Act and local Municipal By-Law and standards as they apply to the design and build process
  • Apply life cycle costing and asset depreciation of building elements
  • Interpret components of building design and the synergies or interaction between building elements on operation and maintenance of buildings
  • Identify the impacts of environmental and energy requirements being considered for regulation—such as Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) construction and GREEN operations
  • Implement basic principles of project management (PM), including the PM triangle of cost, program and schedule
  • Recognize the roles and responsibilities under the Occupiers Liability and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, as it relates to operations, maintenance and construction
  • Understand the role of the cost consultant and estimation of total project cost
  • Utilize the necessary processes for effective site plan approvals and the acquisition of building permits

Early bird registration rates are offered as follows: $855.00 when registering 60 days prior to the course start date. $895.00 when registering 30 days prior to the course start date. Regular registration fees apply for registrations made less than 30 days prior to the course start date and are priced at $995.00.

You are required to attend all scheduled online synchronous (live online) sessions.
