Course Description

This course examines design and construction techniques practiced in golf course development. Created for golf course superintendents / staff and golf enthusiasts, this offering provides an opportunity to work through the golf course development process from site inventory and analysis to concept and completed design. Specific components of golf environments are discussed in detail including bunkers, greens and tee decks.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the key historical developments of the game of golf
  • Describe and compare key trends in the evolution of golf course design
  • Explain the major factors that must be considered in selecting the location of a golf course
  • Explain the major factors that must be considered when designing the individual features (e.g. greens, tees, fairways, etc.) of the golf course
  • Describe the basic procedures and methods of constructing the many features of a golf course
  • Explain the basic maintenance procedures required to establish a new golf course

Course Materials

This course uses three copies of a landscape plan that will be mailed to you by the first week of the course. An online [PDF] manual is available within your course website.

Additional recommended supplies:

The following materials are required to complete the assignments. Please note that SCS does not supply the following recommended materials.

  • Lightweight white tracing paper (24” Rolls preferred)
  • 12-inch Triangular Engineering Scale Ruler (1:100, 1:200, 1:250, 1:300, 1:400, 1:500)
  • Pencil Crayons (student’s choice)
  • Standard HB Pencils
  • White Vinyl Eraser
  • Black Fineliner Pens
  • Software – AutoCAD and Photoshop/Illustrator are helpful, but not necessary
  • Hardware – Access to a scanner and a large format scanner (Staples or local print shops can usually assist)
