Gain a broad understanding of food science by concentrating on the chemistry, microbiology and processing of foods, and on the maintenance of food safety and quality throughout. Details
Prerequisites
Participation in the certificate requires the completion of post-secondary level microbiology and chemistry. If you have completed these at another institution, please send your transcript and indicate the course codes, so we can waive your prerequisite requirements. You can email the Learner Success Advisor.
If you have not completed these courses in previous studies, we have approved Thompson Rivers University CHEM1523 and Athabasca University BIOL325. Please register for these courses and upon successful completion of them both, send your transcript showing passing grades to the Learner Success Advisor to participate in the certificate.
If you wish to take these courses at an alternate institution, please contact the Learner Success Advisor before registering with the institution name and course codes so the courses can be assessed for equivalency.
FOOD*2010 is the only course within the certificate that does not require the prerequisite requirements completed ahead of time.
Degree-credit
- This program is intended for adult learners who are at least 18 years of age.
- Enrolment is done on a course-by-course basis; there is no certificate application process.
- Some courses have an approval process that must be completed prior to confirming enrolment.
- Course availability changes each semester; it is recommended you submit notification requests for each course in the program to be informed when registration opens.
- Course registration closes four days after the start of the semester.
This program requires the completion of four required courses and one elective. The courses may be taken in any order, as long as prerequisite requirements are met.

It takes approximately two years to complete the program.
The price per course is as follows:
- Ontario Tuition Fee: $683.39
- Non-Ontario Tuition Fee: $815.35
- International Tuition Fee: $3,787.68

Additional Information
There is a residency requirement of 70% for degree-credit certificates and diplomas. Participants may substitute one course from another institution that can be used toward the certificate requirements. To start the substitution process, please contact the Learner Success Advisor.
