Overview
If you are an aspiring writer who wants to get serious about your craft, then the Creative Writing Certificate program is designed for you. The Creative Writing Certificate enables you to focus your learning in one of three genres (prose fiction, creative non-fiction, or poetry), and on the writing techniques of your chosen genre.
Program instructors are experienced, published authors who will offer you practical guidance on how to generate ideas, take that spark of inspiration to the page, improve your writing skills, develop your writing voice, and explore your creativity while offering advice about publishing and being a writer.
Through the program you will:
- Examine the elements of creative writing and practice them through in-class writing exercises.
- Give and receive constructive feedback through workshopping your writing with your peers and your instructors.
- Build a portfolio of your writing samples and develop a writing practice.
The Creative Writing Certificate program consists of five courses: Introduction to Creative Writing (required), two courses in your chosen genre, one elective from an additional genre, and a final capstone project. Designed as a highly generative learning experience for aspiring authors, this certificate will provide you with the knowledge and skills to create your own literary works.
What You'll Learn
Upon successful completion of this program, you will be able to:
- Identify creative writing elements, styles, and narrative devices used across genres and apply these to your writing
- Engage with a diverse range of published literature to identify and evaluate their creative elements, techniques, and genre-specific features
- Create original written works within your chosen genre that can be used to build a writing portfolio
- Provide and receive constructive feedback on your creative work in collaborative writing workshops and integrate this feedback into your revision process
- Develop a consistent writing practice that includes regular revision to create publishable work
- Design and create a culminating writing project in your chosen genre under the guidance of a mentor
- Gain an understanding of the professional writing industry and identify writing and publishing resources that will assist you in publishing your writing

Details
This program requires the completion of one (1) required course, two (2) course electives from the same genre, one (1) elective course from another genre or a special topics course, and one (1) required capstone project. Required and elective courses may be taken in any order. The capstone project must be taken after completion of four (4) other courses.

Enrolment is on a course-by-course basis and there is no application required. This program is intended for adult learners who are at least 18 years of age or have completed Grade 12 or equivalent. Course availability changes each semester. It is recommended you submit notification requests for each course in the program to be informed when registration opens. Course registration closes before the start of the semester.
Complete one required course, three electives, and one capstone project. Request your parchment through the SCS Student Portal once all requirements are met.
You can take up to 5 years from the start of your first course to complete and receive the certificate.
