Overview 

The Equine Science Certificate takes a research-based approach to examining equine practices, with a focus on how informed improvements support horse health and performance. The program explores key areas including equine physiology, anatomy, genetics, disease prevention, breeding and foaling, and stable management.

Develop the skills to apply the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Horses while promoting higher standards of care across equine operations.

By the end of the program, you can assess management practices, apply recognized care standards, and clearly communicate horse health status to veterinarians and other professionals.

With four courses to complete, this certificate allows you to tailor your equine education to align with your interests and career goals.

Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of how improved management practices contribute to the health and performance of horses
  • Interpret, analyze, and apply the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Horses to ensure high standards of care
  • Conduct research and analyze a variety of science and evidence-based resources and synthesize this knowledge to upgrade and improve standards of care and management practices both personally and within the industry
  • Observe and communicate the health status to veterinarians for effective health monitoring and management

Details 

This program requires the completion of one required courses and three electives. Courses may be taken in any order. We recommend that you begin your studies with Management of the Equine Environment.

Enrolment is on a course-by-course basis and there is no application required. This program is intended for adult learners who are at least 18 years of age or have completed Grade 12 or equivalent. Course availability changes each semester. It is recommended you submit notification requests for each course in the program to be informed when registration opens. Course registration closes six days after the start of the semester. The courses are facilitated by an instructor and all students registered in the course progress through the course content at the same time.

Complete one required courses and three elective courses. Request your parchment through the SCS Student Portal once all requirements are met.

You can take up to 5 years from the start of your first course to complete and receive the certificate.

The price per course is currently $625. Course prices are subject to change and are not guaranteed. The total cost of the program may vary depending on available discounts* and the length of time to completion.
